Founded in 1870 by thirteen German-American families, Cross Lutheran has seen many changes over the course of its (almost) 150 years. As the community around it changed, Cross embraced the diversity of all kinds. It was not always an easy road. At many moments, it wrestled with its moments of transition, from welcoming its first African American members in 1959 to its decision to fully embrace LGBT members in 1989.
As Cross grew in understanding and compassion, it developed ministries, many of which are now independent nonprofit organizations. Through it all, Cross evolved a dynamic, mission-driven congregation that reaches out to the neighborhood and its people.
