How to Grow Herbs Indoors

You can have fresh herbs all year round. This is a good thing when you live in an area like Wisconsin. All they need is plenty of sunlight and water.

Place your pot in a spot that gets at least six hours of sunlight daily. Also, all herbs need to be planted in pots with good drainage holes. Place a saucer under the pot to catch the water.

Here are a few herbs that you can grow easily indoors

  1. Basil:  Place the pot in a south facing window, basil likes plenty of sunlight and warmth.  Water regularly.  Basil works well in sauces, salads, pesto.
  2. Bay Leaf:  It is a perennial that does best using the container gardening method.  Place the pot in any east or west facing window but be sure it does not get crowded.  Bay needs good air circulation, well- draining soil and water occasional.
  3. Chervil (French Parley):  Grows well in low light but needs temperature between 65 degrees and 70 degrees to thrive.
  4. Chives:  Dig up a clump of chive from the garden and replant it in a pot of rich soil.  Leave the pot outside until the leaves die back.  In early winter move the pot to your coolest part of the house basement for a few days.    Then move it to your brightest spot in the house.
  5. Oregano:  Take a cutting from a tip of the outdoor plant.   Place the tip in a pot of soil.  Place the pot in a south facing window.
  6. Parsley:   You can plant seeds or take a clump from an outside plant.  Parsley likes sun but, will grow slowly in an east or west facing window.
  7. Rosemary:  Start with a cutting from a plant and keep it in soilless mix until roots start to grow.  Then place it in pot with soil.  It will grow best in a south facing window.
  8. Sage:  Take a cutting from the tip of an outdoor plant.  It tolerates dry indoor air well, water when soil feels dry.  It needs strong sun from the south.
  9. Thyme:  You can start by taking a cutting from the tip of the plant or bring the whole plant indoors and repot it.  Thyme likes full sun but will grow in an east or west window.  Occasional trimming to maintain the plants shape and size.
  10. Mint:  Grows quickly and spreads rapidly which makes it ideal for pots.  It needs full sunlight to partial shade.  Mint is thirstily too.  It needs regular water keep moist soil to thrive.  There are a lot of mint types Golden Apple Mint, Spearmint, Peppermint.

Mint Cucumber Water

Here’s a refreshing beverage you can try! In a pitcher, put 8 cups of water, 2-3 fresh cucumber slices and 2-3 spearmint leaves. (Use another type of mind if you prefer.) Chill for 1 hour, and serve.
